Planned Giving Resources
1. Gifts of Stock (Stock Transfers)
Gifts of appreciated stock are a wonderful way to support The Aphasia Project while potentially enjoying tax benefits. When you donate stocks, you avoid paying capital gains taxes and can deduct the value of the gift from your taxable income.
How It Works:
- To donate stock, simply transfer the shares to The Aphasia Project’s brokerage account.
- You can donate publicly traded stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. The value of the donation is determined by the stock’s market value on the day it is transferred.
Transfer Instructions:
- Brokerage Firm: Truist Investment Services
- Account Number: WA8-119257
- DTC Number: 0226
- Legal Name: The Aphasia Project
Next Steps:
1) Contact your broker to initiate the transfer of shares to The Aphasia Project’s account.
2) Please notify us of your gift so we can provide proper acknowledgment and ensure it is directed to the intended purpose. You may contact us by phone at 919-650-3854 or by email info@aphasiaproject.org and provide us with the following information:
- Number of shares being transferred
- Name of securities (preferably with CUSIP number) being transferred
- Name of broker making the transfer
2. Planned Giving Through Retirement Accounts (IRAs, 401(k)s, etc.)
One of the easiest ways to support The Aphasia Project is by naming us as a beneficiary of your retirement account, such as an IRA, 401(k), or 403(b). This option is simple to set up and provides a lasting gift without impacting your current assets.
How It Works:
- Simply update your beneficiary designation with your retirement account provider to include The Aphasia Project (Tax ID: 27-1771636).
- You can designate a specific percentage or a fixed amount of your account balance to TAP.
- Your retirement funds can then pass directly to TAP upon your passing, bypassing probate.
Sample Beneficiary Designation Language:
“I designate The Aphasia Project (Tax ID: 27-1771636) as a beneficiary of 10% of my retirement account (IRA, 401(k), etc.).”
Next Steps: Contact your retirement plan administrator for instructions on updating your beneficiary designation. If you need help, feel free to reach out to us at annie@aphasiaproject.org for guidance.
3. Planned Giving Through Life Insurance
You can make a meaningful gift to The Aphasia Project by naming us as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy. This is a simple and impactful way to make a difference for future generations of individuals with aphasia.
How It Works:
- Contact your life insurance provider to update your beneficiary designation.
- You can designate The Aphasia Project as a primary or secondary beneficiary of your policy.
- Your life insurance benefit can provide significant support to TAP while having minimal impact on your estate.
Sample Beneficiary Designation Language:
“I designate The Aphasia Project (Tax ID: 27-1771636) as the beneficiary of my life insurance policy.”
Next Steps: Reach out to your insurance company to adjust your policy’s beneficiary designation. Contact us at annie@aphasiaproject.org if you need assistance or have questions.
4. Bequests (Wills and Trusts): Make a Gift Through Your Will or Trust
Including The Aphasia Project in your will or trust is a powerful way to ensure your legacy supports individuals with aphasia for years to come. It’s a simple process that can be tailored to your wishes.
How It Works:
- A bequest is a gift made through your will or trust, and it can be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or specific property.
- You can also choose to direct your bequest to support a specific program or area of The Aphasia Project’s work.
Sample Bequest Language:
“I give, devise, and bequeath to The Aphasia Project in North Carolina, the sum of $___ or ___% of my residual estate, OR the following described property: [description of property]. This gift is to be used for the organization’s unrestricted purposes.”
Next Steps: Contact your attorney to add a bequest to your will or trust. If you need more information or want to discuss options, please reach out to us at annie@aphasiaproject.org.
General Notes for All Planned Giving Options:
- Tax Benefits: Many planned gifts come with significant tax advantages. You may be eligible for income tax deductions, estate tax deductions, and other benefits based on the type of gift you make.
- Consult with Advisors: We recommend speaking with your financial planner, estate attorney, or tax advisor to ensure these gifts are structured in the way that best aligns with your financial and philanthropic goals.
- Legacy Society: If you’ve already made a planned gift, we would love to recognize you as a member of our Legacy Society. Please let us know if you’ve included TAP in your plans.
